Finding Local Events as a Service Member or Veteran in San Diego
Community events are one of the easiest ways to stay connected after a move, a deployment or the transition out of uniform. San Diego has one of the largest military and veteran populations in the country, and that shows in the calendar. Throughout the year you will find resource fairs, job and education expos, transition workshops, memorial observances, unit reunions and family-friendly gatherings alongside the city's ordinary run of concerts, theatre and festivals.
Where to look
- Installation channels: Base family readiness and MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) offices regularly post events, discounted tickets and family programmes. Check the official pages for your installation.
- County and city veteran offices: Local government veteran services often host or list benefits clinics and claims-help days.
- Veteran service organisations: Groups such as the American Legion, VFW and DAV run post meetings, social nights and volunteer projects that are open to new members.
- VA facilities: VA medical centres and Vet Centers sometimes hold outreach events, health fairs and peer-support sessions.
Practical tips
Always confirm dates, times and registration details on the organiser's official website, because schedules change and older listings stay online long after an event has passed. For hiring fairs, bring copies of your résumé and know which of your military skills translate to civilian roles. For benefits events, carry your DD-214 or other service records if you plan to ask about eligibility. Popular arts and holiday events can sell out, so book early and plan parking or transit ahead of time. Many venues and attractions offer military discounts, but policies vary, so ask before you buy.
Arts and culture count too. A night at the theatre or a local festival can be a low-pressure way for families to reconnect after time apart. If you are looking for support rather than entertainment, our resources page collects useful starting points, and the community section highlights ways to get involved with fellow veterans around the region.
