Finding Out What's Happening Around You

For service members, veterans and their families in San Diego, there is almost always something going on nearby, but it is not always easy to hear about it in time. Community events range from resource fairs and job expos to memorial ceremonies, family days, peer support meetups and volunteer projects. Knowing where to look makes the difference between missing out and showing up.

Where announcements usually appear

  • Base and installation channels: family readiness groups, unit newsletters and installation social media pages often post local events first, especially for active-duty families.
  • Veteran service organisations: local posts and chapters of national veteran groups regularly host gatherings, ceremonies and social nights open to members and often to the wider community.
  • VA and county resources: the VA and county veteran services offices publish information about outreach events, benefit clinics and town halls.
  • Libraries and community centres: these frequently host free workshops on topics like resume writing, small business basics and education benefits.

Making the most of an event

Before you go, confirm the date, time and location with the organiser directly, since details can change. If an event involves benefits or claims help, bring relevant paperwork such as your DD-214 or ID, and write down your questions in advance. For larger gatherings, plan parking or public transport ahead, and check whether registration is required.

Events are also one of the best ways to meet people who understand military life. Even a short conversation at a resource table can point you toward a program, mentor or support group you did not know existed.

For ongoing guidance, browse our resources section, see what local groups are doing on the community page, or read up on eligibility in our benefits explainers before attending a benefits clinic.
