Planning a Visit as a Veteran or Service Member
The Midway is one of the few places where you can walk the working spaces of a carrier rather than just view it from the pier. Self-guided routes take visitors from the hangar deck up to the flight deck, where restored aircraft from different eras of naval aviation are parked, and down into areas such as berthing compartments, the galley, engine spaces and the ship's island. Many of the docents are veterans themselves, and for former sailors and aviators their stories often turn a museum visit into something closer to a reunion with the life they knew.

- Allow plenty of time. The ship is large, with steep ladders between decks. Comfortable shoes help, and visitors with limited mobility should ask staff about accessible routes and elevators.
- Plan transport. The carrier sits on the busy downtown waterfront along North Harbor Drive. Parking nearby fills up on weekends and during conventions, so public transit, rideshare or a walk from the Gaslamp Quarter or Seaport Village can be easier.
- Dress in layers. The flight deck can be windy and sunny, while the interior spaces are cooler.

Bringing a printed roster, name tags with unit and years served, and a plan for members who cannot manage ladders makes the day smoother for everyone.
