Practical Steps for Spouses Settling Into San Diego

A permanent change of station to San Diego brings its own mix of opportunity and pressure. The region is home to several major Navy and Marine Corps installations, which means a large, well-established military spouse community, but also a competitive job market and high housing costs. A few practical steps in the first months can make the transition smoother.

Start with the installation support centre

Every major installation has a family support office, such as the Fleet and Family Support Center for Navy families and Marine Corps Community Services for Marine families. These offices typically offer relocation briefings, employment workshops, financial counselling and referrals to local services. Visiting early, before you urgently need help, gives you a clear picture of what is available and who to call later.

Use federal spouse employment programs

The Department of Defense's Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) program offers free career coaching, and the Military Spouse Employment Partnership connects spouses with employers who have committed to hiring them. Military spouse preference may also apply to certain federal jobs. Keep a portable résumé that explains gaps or frequent moves plainly. Employers familiar with military life generally understand them.

Plan ahead for licence transfers

If you work in a licensed field such as nursing, teaching, cosmetology or counselling, contact the relevant California licensing board as soon as orders arrive. Federal law now requires states to recognise many out-of-state licences for military spouses under certain conditions, but processes vary by profession, so confirm the current requirements directly with the board. Some services also offer reimbursement for relicensing costs after a move.

Look after your own wellbeing

Deployments, long training cycles and distance from extended family take a toll. Military OneSource provides confidential non-medical counselling at no cost, and many chaplains offer support regardless of faith. Spouse clubs and unit family readiness groups can be a quick route to friendships and local know-how.
